EU Debate NI Toolkit

What is a referendum?

A vote by the people on a specific issue

What is the UK?

The UK is the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” and is made up of four countries – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What is the EU?

The EU is the “European Union” – it is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries, of which the UK is a member.

The European Union was established in 1958 as the European Economic Community (EEC) which at the time was about economic co-operation between 6 countries. The UK joined the EEC in 1973 and since then it developed into an organisation spanning policy areas and developing its own institutions including the European Parliament and European Commission. In 1993 the EEC was renamed the “European Union” and now has 28 member countries.

What are we being asked?

Should the UK remain a member of the EU or leave the EU?

This Referendum will take place on 23rd June 2016
